Coastal Recreational Fishing License Now Required

As of January 2007, any person 16 and older who wants to fish recreationally in any water designated as coastal and joint waters of North Carolina must purchase a Coastal Recreational Fishing License (CRFL). The NC General Assembly passed legislation in 2004 to create a saltwater license, and Governor Mike Easley signed it into law in 2005.

Anyone who purchased a Wildlife Resources Commission lifetime license that includes basic inland fishing privileges before Jan. 1, 2006 will be grandfathered by this law change and will not be required to purchase a separate license in order to participate in coastal recreational fishing. These lifetime licenses include any infant, youth, adult, over 70, and disabled sportsman’s license; the comprehensive fishing, over 70 fishing only, disabled veterans’ and totally disabled licenses.  For more information, visit www.ncwildlife.org/pg01_License/pg1_CRFL.htm.

The “A-B-Seas” of Selecting NC Seafood
Everyone knows that seafood can be an excellent part of a healthy lifestyle. As more and more health-conscious consumers turn toward the ocean’s bounty, more and more people become confused as to what to look for in fresh fish. Does fresh fish really have an ammonia smell? (It doesn’t.) Should fresh cut fish look moist (It should). An emphasis on fresh, local-caught seafood means consumers have much more quality choices at the market, but more quality choices don’t necessarily mean “easier to tell if it’s fresh or not. Carving Out a Slice of History

Curled up slivers of juniper are tumbling through the air and sticking to Anthony Brooks’ faded teal sweatshirt as he purposefully chops into his latest decoy. Inside the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum’s carver’s studio, which has been modeled after an old hunting lodge, Brooks is a natural fit. Relaxed into a rocking chair at the center of this living exhibit, he glides back and forth so gently that wood shavings scattered beneath the chair’s rockers remain an undisturbed history of his morning’s work.
