Church Street Coffee, Deli
and Irish Pub:
Where the Locals Go
When
vacationing, it’s always great to find out where those who live
in the area choose to spend their time. It’s sometimes hard to
get a feel for the local favorites when you’re only in town for
a week or two. Here’s a chance to find out some inside
information on just such a place.
Located on the
waterfront in downtown Swansboro, the Church Street Coffee, Deli
and Irish Pub is captivating before you even walk in the door.
Located at 105 Church Street, it is in the heart of the historic
district, which features quaint shops, antiques, narrow streets
and of course, spectacular waterfront views.
Established in
1993, owners Marty and Harriette Proctor opened the first coffee
shop in the area (then called the Church Street Coffee Company).
The coffee and pastry shop was originally located on the ground
level. Then after weathering four hurricanes and constant
flooding, the building was raised up in 1998. In 1997, they
added the Boars Head deli and expanded by adding the outdoor
courtyard area, perfect for dining al fresco. In 2005, they
opened the Irish Pub, which offers over 40 different imported
beers and micro brews and an extensive wine selection.
Upon entering
the deli, the first thing that catches your eye is the array of
varied coffee mugs hanging along the wall. The mugs are all
different, each with a different name above them. These are the
names of local residents who come in each and every day to have
their coffee craving satisfied. The mugs are hung there not only
for display, but also for use and reflect the variety of tastes
and personalities of their owners. Each day, the locals come in
and grab their individual mugs and head to the counter for a
fill up.
It’s easy to
see why there is high demand for the coffee and espresso. Church
Street features “illy” espresso, and sells all its coffees by
the pound or half-pound. Also available are a wide selection of
flavored cappuccinos, lattes and mochas served steaming hot or
ice cold. For the chocolate lover, try their famous hot
chocolate or iced blended cocoa. Both are topped with whipped
cream and drizzled with Ghirardelli chocolate.
The deli
focuses on quality by serving Boar’s Head meat and cheeses.
There is a large selection of appetizing and uniquely-named
specialty sandwiches to choose from. For instance, there’s the
Reggitational which is grilled ham and cheese with mayo, spicy
mustard and everything but the kitchen sink. Or how about the
Yard Buzzard: fresh southern chicken salad with lettuce, tomato
and your choice of bread. In addition to the sandwiches, the
deli showcases Church Street Dogs…all beef franks served just
about any way you can imagine.
For a taste of
what Swansboro has to offer, stop in to the Church Street
Coffee, Deli and Irish Pub. No matter what your taste, there’s
something for everyone. Details, 910-326-7572.
